The alarm was sounded, and t,be neighbors Immediately assembled, and by tearing off a lew boards succeeded In extinguishing the flames before any material "damage - was done. So ul con sc Jons were tbey of bis near end that several of them visited and conversed with him late h tho afternoon of that day without the slightest premonition that in a few hours more their friend would be cold in death. Mr. Williams was quite a young man only 32, at the time of his death. lie was the son of Opt David Williams, of Company K , Third North Carolina In fantry, a brave and chivalrous soul who yielded up bis life at Sbarpsburg. He was a native of Ilolly Shelter district, then a part of New Hanover, but now in Pender county. General William McRae, at present Su perintendent of tbe Western Atlantic R. R., c better known as tbe Geo'giaRoad) arrived in this city this morning from Atl .nta, at the itr'ance and upon the invitation of the present management of the newly organized Carolina Central Eai road. -I is understood ibat General Mc Kae'a visit to Wilmington at this time is to signify his acceptance or dlina'ion of ihepcsi ion tendered hiin recentiy as Gen eral Manager of the Carolina Central Rail -road ; but it is not known authoritively yet whether the General will accept or not If he accept General MscRae will return here after a tilp to Atlanta and enter upon the duties of his new position in the course often days. " Quite a number of General MacRae's old tr.ieuds, among whom were some of the soldiers of his old brigade in thelArmy of Northern Virginia, gathered arpund the General at the Purcell House this morn -ing anxious to learn from him if he was or was not coming back to live amongst bis own people once more. But we haven't discovered any one who found out positively his intentions. All we can say is, that it is our belief when General Mac Rae gets ready to let the people know his Intentions he will do it, and until tha time there isn't much use in any one trying to find out from him what h i pur poses are; but still we can't help wishing aad hoping that It will be consistent with General McRae's desires, as well as his Interest, to come back and locate among us once again. - i.
